Hit 500 trail miles this year and it snuck up on me

I was just checking my GPS app last night after a quick 8 mile loop on the Appalachian up near Bear Mountain and saw my total for 2024 hit 502 miles. That's way more than I've ever done in a single year before, I barely even noticed because I just kept doing shorter hikes on weekends. Has anyone else had a milestone sneak up like that where you didn't even realize you were racking up serious distance?

Those hidden miles from short weekday hikes add up way faster than the big 20 mile days, don't they. I hit 300 miles this fall doing the same loops over and over near my house in the Catskills and it felt like I blinked and missed it. Makes me wonder how many of us are accidentally training for thru-hikes without even trying.

It's wild how the little consistent things end up being the real foundation for everything else... same with saving spare change or reading a few pages a night, you don't notice until you've got a whole pile built.
