Hot take: Planning every mile with GPS strips the soul from a backpacking trip.
My crew always logs exact routes for safety, but I feel like it kills any chance for surprise finds. Last summer, ditching the tech for a basic trail map led me to a secret lake not on any app. Do you stick to the plan or wander off?

That secret lake find is a solid win for ditching the tech. Guess your safety plan doesn't include awesome surprises, huh?

Exactly, real adventure starts when the GPS dies.

My buddy's phone died on a trail last fall and he got totally turned around for an hour. Ended up finding this old, overgrown fire watch tower no one seems to remember. Felt like discovering a secret, kinda proves @jason_black2's point about the cool stuff you miss when you stick to the plan.
