I finally figured out why my feet were always wrecked after a long day on the trail

For years, I'd just lace my boots tight from bottom to top. On day two of the Timberline Trail loop, a guy at Ramona Falls pointed out I was crushing the top of my foot. He showed me his 'heel lock' lacing for the top two eyelets, which stops your heel from sliding. My next 15 miles felt completely different. Anyone have other lacing tricks for steep downhill sections?

My buddy had the same heel slip problem on the PCT. He switched to that lock lacing for the top holes and it fixed his blisters. Makes a huge difference on long descents.

Totally agree on the lock lacing. Saw a guy on the JMT with shredded heels from slip. He re-laced right there at camp, problem gone by morning. It's not about tightness, it's about that anchor point. Simple fix most people never try.
