I finally tried a hammock setup on the JMT last week

I was hauling my tent through 8 miles of mosquitos near Thousand Island Lake when a guy with a hammock told me to ditch the poles. Switched over and spent the night swinging like a idiot while my gear got soaked from condensation underneath. Anyone else have a hammock fail on a long route or am I just doing it wrong?

Wait, did you have a rainfly set up over your hammock or did you just go full cowboy mode? Because that condensation problem sounds like you skipped the tarp part of the equation. I've seen plenty of hammock guys on the JMT who swear by a good drip line setup to keep water from running down the straps into the hammock itself. The thing nobody mentions is that hammocks work great until you hit tree line above 10k feet, then you're stuck on the ground anyway unless you pack a stand.

Changed my mind about ultralight after my Kelty tripod snapped in the rain.
