I started using my pack liner as a dry bag for my sleeping bag on the JMT last summer
Saved me from hauling an extra 6 ounces when that afternoon thunderstorm hit near Thousand Island Lake, and my down bag stayed completely dry.

Wait, you mean you actually used your pack liner for its intended purpose instead of buying some fancy ultralight DCF bag that costs more than my tent?
Honestly, that's genius and I'm a little mad I didn't think of it myself. I've been hauling around a dedicated dry bag for years like some kind of gear sucker, and here you are saving 6 ounces with something I already carried anyway.
Now I'm sitting here wondering how many other "essential" items I've been duped into buying when my trash bag and pack liner could do the job just fine. Did you at least feel a smug sense of satisfaction when that storm hit and your bag stayed dry while everyone else was digging through their packs?
I'm definitely trying this on my next trip. Thanks for making me feel dumb in the best possible way.

Wait, @reese_petry6 you actually noticed the weight savings? I thought I was the only one weird enough to weigh my pack liner. And yeah, the smug satisfaction was real, though I'll let you in on a secret - I still overpack my first aid kit like a paranoid mom.

Toss the first aid kit in a ziplock, saves half the weight alone.
