Met a thru-hiker on the JMT who carried a hardback book the whole way

Ran into a guy named Joe near Evolution Lake who had a copy of War and Peace in his pack. He said he read 10 pages a day and it kept him centered on trail. Has anyone else seen hikers hauling weirdly heavy stuff for the morale boost?

Honestly, that's the kind of trail move I totally respect.

That "kept him centered on trail" is exactly what my buddy claimed when he lugged a cast iron skillet for 40 miles on the PCT. He used it exactly once to cook pancakes then carried the stupid thing every step after that. He swore it was worth it for that one morning but I've never seen a hiker complain so much about their "morale item.
