Remember when everyone argued about the High Sierra Trail vs. the John Muir Trail?

Back in 2015, I had a solid two weeks and had to pick one. The JMT was the classic, but the High Sierra Trail from Crescent Meadow to Whitney Portal was the shorter, quieter option. I went with the HST, and it was the right call for me. The first day out of Sequoia, I remember hitting Bearpaw Meadow and thinking how few people were around. The route over Kaweah Gap felt like having the whole range to myself, which you just don't get on the JMT anymore. The final push up Whitney was brutal, but seeing the sunrise from the summit with only a handful of other folks made it special. Has anyone else done the HST recently and noticed if it's gotten more crowded?

You made a great choice going for the quieter trail. That feeling of having the place to yourself is getting harder to find. I hope it stays that way for a while longer.

Honestly, more people on the trails means more folks getting outside, which is a good thing. The quiet spots are still out there if you know where to look.
