Switched from paper maps to a phone app for a Utah trip last fall

I used to plan every route by printing out topo maps and highlighting trails with a marker. Then on a 5 day trip in the La Sal Mountains, I took a wrong turn in the dark and wasted 3 miles. Now I download offline maps on Gaia and mark waypoints for water sources and campsites before I leave. It saves me time and I don’t have to stop and unfold a wet map in the rain anymore. Has anyone else found a specific app that works better for desert routes?

Heard good things about OnX for desert stuff, supposed to have better trail data out west.

Yeah man you nailed it. OnX is legit for desert riding. I switched to it last year after getting lost on a BLM road that just disappeared on Google Maps. Their layer for old mining roads and washes out west is way better than anything else I've tried. Plus the map downloads actually work when you're out of cell range, which is pretty much always out there.
