That time a guy on the JMT told me to ditch my bear canister for an Ursack

I used to swear by hard bear canisters and thought anyone using a bag was asking for trouble. Then a thru-hiker in Yosemite pointed out my can was 3 pounds and taking up half my pack space for a 10-day stretch. Switched to an Ursack last summer on the Wind River High Route and honestly didn't have any issues with bears or rodents getting into it. Anyone else had a bad experience with a soft bag that changed your mind?

Tried an Ursack on the PCT last year and it held up fine against a curious black bear near Crater Lake, so I'm sold on them for the weight savings alone.

Bears and lightweight gear, name a better duo. Glad your Ursack worked out, but I'd love to see that bear's Yelp review of the whole experience. Probably something like "Got a mouthful of nylon and zero snacks, 1 star." Guess you got lucky with a polite bear that didn't feel like testing the seams. I'll stick to my heavy metal can for now, but you do you.
