Used to obsess over mileage per day, now I plan around coffee spots

Tbh I used to plan every leg of a trip based on hitting 20 miles a day, no exceptions. Last summer in the Smokies I pushed through a rainy afternoon just to make camp, ended up soaked and miserable for two days. Now I just pick the route and then find the best cafe or diner within a short detour, and I build the day around that stop. It sounds silly but a 45 minute break with a real cup of coffee fixes my head more than any extra mile ever did. Has anyone else ditched strict mileage goals for something totally unrelated to hiking? My buddy in Asheville thinks I am nuts.
