Used to plan my Sierra trips with a paper map and a highlighter, now I'm glued to my phone checking AllTrails every five minutes. What happened to just walking?

My old paper map from 2012 still has the best route to Thousand Island Lake.

That old paper map is probably way more reliable than GPS in the backcountry anyway (my phone died on a hike once and I was totally lost for an hour). Reminds me of the time I used a 2005 map to find a fishing spot near Mammoth and ended up on a trail that didn't exist anymore. The lake I found was actually better than the one I was looking for, so maybe outdated maps have their own magic.
