Water filter trick saved me 3 days of misery on the JMT

Carried a squeeze filter for years and always fought with clogging on glacier melt. Last July I tried letting the dirty water settle in a spare bag for 20 minutes before filtering, night and day difference. Anyone else pre-settling their water before filtering or is that overkill?
