Found out my feeder was pulling in 14 species and I never even noticed the brown ones
I got one of those cheap window feeders back in April and figured it was mostly house sparrows and the occasional cardinal. Last Saturday I actually sat down with a notebook for one hour, just to see. Counted 14 different birds, including three kinds of sparrows I'd been lumping together as "little brown guys" this whole time. Turns out a chipping sparrow has a rusty cap and a clean gray chest, while a song sparrow looks streaky and messy. Felt pretty dumb but also kind of great. Has anyone else done a sit-down count like this and been surprised by what was hiding in plain sight?
