Hit 200 species in my yard last week
Honestly, I never thought I'd get past maybe 50 different birds in my backyard in Ohio. But I kept track in a notebook every time I spotted something new. Last Tuesday morning I saw a yellow-billed cuckoo and that put me at exactly 200. Ngl, most people say you need feeders or a pond to pull that many but I just have a messy yard with overgrown bushes. Has anyone else tracked their yard list longer than they expected?

The "overgrown bushes" part got me because that's exactly what did it for me too. I stopped mowing one corner of my yard two years ago and suddenly saw brown thrashers and a swamp sparrow where there was nothing but grass before. Now my neighbors probably think I'm a lazy bum but I've got 87 species and counting.

Ngl I used to be one of those people who thought you had to have a feeder setup worth thousands or a pond to get a decent list. But seeing that 200 on just overgrown bushes is wild. Last summer I let a patch of goldenrod and ragweed go nuts in the back corner and suddenly had a prairie warbler show up, which I never would have gotten otherwise. Maybe it's just me but I feel like most of us overcomplicate what birds actually want.
