Hit 50 different bird species in my backyard this year, totally caught me off guard

I started keeping a list in January just for fun, mostly sparrows and finches. Somehow I hit 50 species yesterday when a random merlin swooped in and scared off everything else. I live in a normal suburb in Ohio, not near any big parks or anything. How many species have you guys tallied in your yard?

Got a vulture circling my compost pile last week and honestly felt more judged than excited.

Give the vulture some credit, they're one of nature's clean up crews doing a job nobody else wants to do. That bird circling your pile is way more excited about finding lunch than judging your life choices. Having some wild scavengers around means you're doing compost right enough to attract real wildlife.
