My $40 squirrel proof feeder failed in 3 days and the birds just watched

Bought a "squirrel proof" feeder from the hardware store in Boise three days ago and the fat squirrel chewed the plastic port ring right off, spilling millet all over my lawn. Now the chickadees won't come back and I'm wondering if a metal baffle on the pole is worth the money. Has anyone had luck with a cheap fix that actually keeps them out?
