My feeder spot was dead for months, now it's packed every morning

I put up a new feeder in my backyard in Portland back in February and barely saw a bird for like 3 months. Just a couple house sparrows here and there, real disappointing. Then I moved it about 10 feet closer to my big rhododendron bush in late April and it totally changed things. Now I'm getting chickadees, finches, and even a pair of juncos every day right around 7am. I guess the bush gives them cover so they feel safe coming in. Has anyone else had a spot that was quiet until you changed something small like that?

Yeah moving it closer to cover was the real trick there.

Blame the bush then, birds don't need cover when they're already comfortable in your yard.

Gotta admit I used to think the exact same way, like birds don't need cover if they're already hanging out in your yard. But after moving our feeder closer to the shrubs like @christopherwilliams mentioned, I saw way more finches and cardinals show up, especially during the windy days. It's like they feel safer having a quick escape route nearby even if they seemed fine before. So yeah, I was wrong. The bush or whatever cover you have really does make a difference for them.
