My neighbor Dale in Boise told me to stop scrubbing my suet feeder with soap, and he was right
I used to wash that thing every couple weeks with dish soap and warm water, thinking I was keeping the birds healthy. Dale said soap leaves a film that birds can smell and it made the suet go rancid faster, so I switched to just hot water and a stiff brush 3 weeks ago. Now I'm getting chickadees and a downy woodpecker hitting it daily instead of once a week. Has anyone else had a feeder that got way more action after switching up how they clean it?
Did you change anything else around that time, like the suet brand or where you hung it? Soap rinses off pretty clean if you're thorough, so I'm not totally sold that was the reason. Three weeks is also right when the weather starts shifting and birds find new food spots anyway.
