My neighbor said my birdbath was a mosquito farm, and he was right
He pointed out the still water in my shallow concrete bath last summer. I switched to a simple plastic one with a small solar fountain I got for about $25. The moving water stopped the bugs and now I see more birds, like goldfinches, stopping for a drink. Has anyone else found a good fix for keeping water fresh without a big setup?

Nice! That solar fountain trick is genius. I just add a few drops of cooking oil to the water's surface, it breaks up the film and skeeters can't land. Works like a charm for my little dish.

Wait @ninab95, didn't you also mention that dish was in direct sun? Because if so, the oil trick can actually backfire - it heats up and smells like burnt popcorn after a few days. I tried it on a small fountain once and ended up having to dump the whole thing out. A drop or two of vegetable oil is fine, but anything more than that just turns into a greasy mess you have to scrub off.
