PSA: That glossy birdhouse is doing more harm than good

I hung a shiny metal one in my yard, and it's been totally ignored. Birds see their reflection and get spooked, so they avoid nesting there completely.

My neighbor's glossy feeder still gets chickadees every morning.

Oh man, that reminds me of my aunt's shiny garden globe. It looked cool but birds kept flying into the window right next to it. @oscarcooper, it's wild how something so small like a glossy finish can mess with them. She ended up moving it to a spot with more bushes.

Bummer. I made that mistake with a metal wind chime once. Scared off every bird in the yard.
