Showerthought: A shallow dish of water on the ground brought in way more birds than my fancy bath.

My elevated birdbath in Atlanta was getting zero action for weeks. I put a plain ceramic plant saucer on the ground near some bushes and filled it with an inch of water. Within two days, I had robins, cardinals, and even a shy brown thrasher using it. Has anyone else found ground-level water works better for certain species?

But what if it's not about feeling safe? I mean, @rosew37 might have a point, but in my yard, the birds use the high bath just as much. Could it be that your ground dish is just in a better spot? Like, near those bushes for quick cover. My guess is the type of bath matters less than putting it where they already hang out.

Oh, that's an interesting thought. I remember reading somewhere that birds actually prefer ground level because it feels more natural to them, like a puddle after a rainstorm. But you're right, @amy692, a good spot near cover probably makes all the difference.

Yeah, I read that ground-level feels safer for them.
