Switched from store-bought suet to homemade 2 months ago and the woodpeckers won't leave
I used to just grab whatever suet blocks were on sale at the feed store. Last November I tried making my own with beef fat, peanut butter, and cornmeal. Now I got 3 downy woodpeckers and a flicker hitting it every morning. Anyone here make their own suet and notice a difference in what birds show up?

Funny enough I used to think homemade suet was overhyped but this post convinced me to try it last month. Now I'm getting a pileated woodpecker almost every afternoon and I never saw those before.

...and honestly once you go homemade it's hard to go back. I started making mine about a year ago with a mix of beef suet, crunchy peanut butter, and a little bit of bird seed mixed in. The downy woodpeckers went from a rare sight to showing up daily, and I even get a red-bellied woodpecker now that I never saw before. Have you noticed the flicker actually staying longer or just passing through?
