That cheap bird feeder I was skeptical about actually works better
I always thought those dollar store tube feeders were junk until a lady at the park in Raleigh showed me hers filled with finches and goldfinches last Saturday. She said the small perches keep bigger birds from hogging all the seed, which makes sense for my yard where grackles dominate. Has anyone else found that the plastic feeders with tiny perches attract more of the smaller species?

Exactly what @lilyo30 described with nyjer seed worked for me in my backyard in Florida.

The little plastic tube feeder I got at Lowes for like 8 bucks has been a game changer for my yard in Virginia Beach. It's got those small perches that only let the goldfinches and chickadees land, and I swear the grackles just walk around underneath looking confused. I put nyjer seed in it and within a week I had a whole flock of goldfinches fighting over the thing. It's beat up and cracked now but still works fine after two years.
