That fancy suet feeder I scoffed at actually works, ugh

I spent 3 years insisting the cheap wire mesh cages were fine for my yard in Columbus. Then a grackle tore through one in a single afternoon back in March. My neighbor handed me her spare upside-down suet holder, the kind with the little roof and bars underneath. I figured the starlings would just hang upside down and still eat everything. Turns out they're too lazy for that, and now the chickadees and downy woodpeckers actually get a turn. Has anyone else seen a dramatic shift in who visits after switching feeders, or did I just get lucky with my local flock?

Did you actually watch them all day, or did you just assume the starlings gave up?
