That time I scared off a whole flock of goldfinches with a squeaky door
So I finally got a nice little flock of goldfinches coming to my feeder last week, right? I was so stoked I tiptoed to the back door to grab my phone for a pic. But my back door hinge has been squeaking for like a month and I keep forgetting to oil it. That high pitched squeak sent every single bird flying off into the neighbor's oak tree. They didn't come back for the rest of the day. I stood there holding my phone like an idiot watching them vanish. So I spent the next morning WD-40ing every hinge on the property including the gate latch. Has anyone else had a dumb little house noise wreck their bird watching moment?

Man that squeaky door situation is brutal, I had almost the exact same thing happen with a rusty screen door once. Took weeks to get the chickadees to come back after I slammed it by accident. Did the goldfinches eventually return the next day or did they pick a new spot altogether?

Birds come back, man. They ain't that picky about their hangout spots lol. @seanh91 I think you're overthinking it a bit. Goldfinches especially are pretty bold little things, they'll be back as soon as they realize the scary noise isn't a regular thing. A week or two of silence doesn't mean they moved to the neighbors. Just give it a few days and keep the feeder full, they'll forget all about the slam.
