TIL I was scaring off the cardinals by cleaning my feeder wrong

For 2 summers I scrubbed the feeder with soapy water every Sunday and wondered why the birds vanished for days after. Turns out the smell lingers and they hate it, my neighbor told me last week after watching me do it and now I just rinse with hot water and let it bake in the sun. Has anyone else messed up feeder hygiene this badly without realizing it?
