Warning: that shiny feeder pole was scaring birds off for 2 months

I put up one of those polished metal poles last April because it looked clean and modern. Cardinals and chickadees would land, flutter, and then bail within 10 seconds. I thought maybe the seed was stale or the squirrels were spooking them. Then my neighbor across the fence in Portland said the reflection was blinding her kitchen window every morning. That's when it clicked, the birds see their own flashy shapes moving around and get nervous. I wrapped the pole with brown duct tape and added some dead branches around the base. Within 3 days the house finches were actually sticking around to eat. Has anyone else dealt with a feeder setup that looked great to people but was totally wrong for the birds?
