Changed my mind about letting the rooster stay after my neighbor said something

I used to think keeping a rooster was just for looks or bragging rights, but last month my neighbor Dave saw me chasing my rooster around the yard and said 'you know he's actually keeping your flock safe, right?' He showed me how that rooster would spot hawks way before the hens and sound the alarm. Now I actually let him do his thing instead of locking him up at night. Has anyone else had a neighbor change how you see your own birds?

Heard that loud and clear. Had a similar thing happen with my neighbor and my old goat. I kept him tied up cause he was a pain in the ass, always knocking stuff over. Neighbor said let him loose an see what happens. That goat turned out to be the best weed eater I ever had, cleared the whole back fence line in a week. Made me realize I was just making more work for myself by keeping him tied up.

Ain't that the truth though? I used to be the type who thought you had to keep everything on a short leash to get anything done, you know? But hearing stories like that makes me wonder how many times I've been my own worst enemy with that mindset. Like with my old truck, I used to baby it so much it never got used for anything real, till a buddy told me to just let it rip and see what happens. Now I use it for hauling firewood and crap, and it's actually running better than ever. Funny how letting go a little can solve problems you didn't even know you were making, right?
