Debating between straw bedding and wood shavings for my coop this winter

I switched from straw to pine shavings last month after my girls kept getting damp chests, but now I'm dealing with more dust and the compost pile doesn't break it down as fast, what do you all use and why?

Oh man, straw bedding, that takes me back. I mean, I tried it one winter and my silkie ended up with the saddest little damp belly every single morning. I switched to pine shavings too but yeah the dust is real. My compost pile just sits there with the shavings like it's waiting for them to do something. It takes forever. I ended up mixing in a ton of grass clippings and kitchen scraps to speed it up, which kinda works but it's a whole extra step.

It's funny how fixing one problem just creates another one somewhere else.
