Did switching to fermented feed really change egg color, or was it just the season?

Back in March I started soaking my layer pellets for 24 hours before feeding, and within 3 weeks my Rhode Island Reds' yolks went from pale yellow to deep orange. My neighbor swears it's all about the marigold petals I added in April, but I only did that once. Has anyone else seen this kind of shift in 21 days, or is the extra protein from fermentation doing more than the flowers?
