Found out my Wyandotte's eggs get darker as the season goes on, never knew that until I looked back at my egg cartons from March
I was reading through a 2019 thread on backyardchickens.com and someone posted their egg color chart going from light tan in spring to almost chocolate brown by November, checked my own records and sure enough same pattern, has anyone else noticed this with their darker breed hens?

Oh wow that's actually a thing? I read somewhere that it has to do with the hen's pigment glands slowing down or speeding up as the season changes, kinda like how some birds get brighter feathers in summer. Makes me wonder if my barred rocks do the same thing, gotta start paying more attention now.

wait hold on what? you're telling me the eggs actually get darker as the season goes on? i've had wyandottes for three years now and i never even noticed. i mean i knew egg color could shift a little but i always thought it was just random or based on diet or something. that's wild that it's a consistent thing with the darker breeds. i gotta go dig out my old egg cartons now and compare them, cause i swear my girls lay the same color all year round but maybe i just wasn't paying attention.
