Just changed my mind about mixing my own feed after a scare with my Barred Rock, Hazel
I used to think bagged layer pellets were a rip off and mixed my own corn and oats for 2 years. Last Tuesday Hazel stopped laying and looked all puffed up on the roost, so I drove her to a vet in Modesto who asked what she ate. Turns out my mix was low on calcium and protein, and she said the shell was stuck. I switched to a 16% layer crumble that afternoon and she laid a normal egg 5 days later. Anyone else mix their own and run into this, or did I just get the ratios wrong?
