Just realized I was overcomplicating my chicken dust bath setup
I was talking to my friend Sarah, who keeps about 20 hens in Portland, and she mentioned she just uses a kiddie pool filled with dirt and wood ash from her fireplace. I'd been buying special sand and diatomaceous earth, mixing it in a fancy wooden box. She said, 'Chickens don't care about fancy, they just want to dig and get clean.' It made me stop and think about all the extra money and effort I was putting in. What's the simplest dust bath setup that's worked for your flock?

What's the simplest dirt mix you've tried that still works, even if @the_vera says it's just dirt?

Honestly, is a dust bath really something to stress over? They're just chickens rolling in dirt.

So when you say you were overcomplicating it, what was the tipping point? Was it the cost of the special sand, or just the time spent mixing everything in that fancy box?
