Shoutout to that $40 automatic chicken coop door I installed last month

It saved my flock from a raccoon that showed up at 2 AM, but my neighbor's cheap $15 timer door got jammed and locked her hens out all night so which side are you on with spending extra on coop security?

That part about the hen dying after the door closed on her neck is exactly why I always tell people to stop cheaping out on coop security. I read somewhere that raccoons can actually learn to open simple latches and slides, so a basic timer door is basically a welcome mat for them. Your neighbor got lucky it was just locked out, but a raccoon at 2 AM would have torn through that flimsy setup in seconds. The $40 is nothing compared to what you'd spend replacing birds or dealing with a massacre lol.

Bought a cheap door off Amazon years ago and found a hen dead inside the coop because it closed on her neck. Spent the extra money on a good one with a safety sensor and it's been running for three years now with zero issues. That $40 saved me from losing birds to a fox that tried digging under it too. Your neighbor got off easy with just locked out hens, could have been worse. I'd rather spend a little more upfront than deal with dead birds and raccoons again. Sometimes the cheap option just isn't worth the risk.
