Showerthought: It took me three months to realize my hens were eating their own eggs

I kept finding broken shells and no yolk, thought it was a predator. Finally caught my barred rock, Bertha, doing it after I switched their feed to a higher protein pellet. Anyone else have a sneaky egg eater they had to outsmart?

Maybe they learned it from watching squirrels.

Doubt it's a learned thing, honestly. Chickens are just weird little opportunists who figure out eggs are tasty. Switching the feed was a solid move.

Totally agree. Had a hen that would crack her own eggs if we didn't collect them fast enough. Little feathered vultures.
