Stopped washing my eggs and suddenly they last twice as long

I read somewhere that the natural bloom on fresh eggs keeps them good on the counter for weeks, so I stopped scrubbing mine clean. After 3 weeks sitting out, they still passed the float test and tasted fine - anyone else skip the wash?

So if the float test is unreliable, what method do you actually rely on to tell if an egg's gone bad before cracking it open? I've heard the sniff test works but you kinda gotta commit at that point.

they still passed the float test and tasted fine" - yeah, but that float test isn't foolproof. I've had eggs that floated but were still fine, and eggs that sank but were bad. You're really just gambling with food safety here. The bigger issue is that you're trusting a random "I read somewhere" fact over the actual scientific reason we wash eggs in the US. We wash them because salmonella is a real problem in our chicken flocks, not because we're just being fussy. The bloom isn't some magic shield against bacteria that's already on the shell. Three weeks on the counter is playing chicken with your gut, honestly. If you get sick from one bad egg, you'll wish you'd just washed them and put them in the fridge like normal people. Store bought eggs are already washed anyway, so the bloom is gone before you even buy them. You're just letting them sit out for no reason.
