That neighbor lady who named all her chickens after spices
Met this older woman at the Maplewood feed store last month... she had a whole system for naming her flock. She pointed at a Buff Orpington and said that one's Paprika because she's reddish and spicy tempered. Then she showed me a speckled Sussex she called Nutmeg... apparently each name had a story behind it tied to the chicken's personality. It made me realize I've been way too boring with my chicken names... do you guys put that much thought into naming yours?

Did you read that one blog post where a lady named her chickens after old lady names like Gertrude and Ethel? I thought that was cute but your neighbor's spice system is way more clever. I heard somewhere that chickens actually recognize their names if you use them consistently, so Paprika probably knows she's Paprika. I might start calling my mean rooster Jalapeño just to see if he calms down any.

Wait, chickens actually learn their names? I always thought that was just something people said to be cute, but now I kinda wanna test it out. Old lady names are funny but honestly the spice thing makes way more sense, especially if you've got a whole flock to keep straight.
