Thought 6 birds was too many for my little Tulsa yard, but the egg math shut me up
When I started with 6 hens on a 40x50 lot in Tulsa I figured I'd be drowning in eggs and fighting the neighbors, but by month 4 I was buying eggs at the store again because half my flock turned out to be lazy layers. Then I added 2 more hens in spring and switched to a 16% layer feed from the farm store, and within 3 weeks I went from 2 or 3 eggs a day to 5 or 6, which is way more than my family of 3 can eat. What's your sweet spot for flock size, do you keep extra hens on purpose or run tight to what you actually eat?
