Dropped $200 on a fancy composter and now I'm fighting rats
I bought one of those tumbling composters from Home Depot back in April because I was tired of turning my pile by hand. Three months later the rats chewed through the plastic bottom and turned my compost into a rodent hotel. Has anyone actually had luck keeping these things pest proof without building a concrete pad underneath?

Yeah I had the same problem with mine! I ended up lining the bottom with hardware cloth and putting it on a little gravel pad - that stopped the rats cold. The hardware cloth was like $15 at the hardware store and took maybe 20 minutes to cut and staple in place.

Ha! It's funny how the cheap fixes end up being the best ones. Hardware cloth is basically the duct tape of the pest control world. I swear half the stuff in my garage is held together with it. It's like $15 and half an hour of work stops a problem that could cost you hundreds later. Almost everything worth doing is just that simple when you get down to it.
