Dropped $40 on those fancy cedar planter boxes from the big box store...

They rotted out in just 1 season here in Portland, meanwhile my neighbor's cheap pine boxes treated with linseed oil are still going strong after 3 years. Should I give up on cedar or was I just buying the wrong stuff?

Stop buying cedar from big box stores. They sell that thin, brittle stuff that's more like fancy fence pickets than real planter wood. Hit up a local lumber yard and ask for "clear heart cedar" or find someone who sells rough sawn cedar from a local mill. My raised beds in Seattle are going on year 5 with no rot because I went thick - at least 2 inches. The cheap thin stuff is basically treated like a fast turnover product.

@bettyhunt Actually I just use those thin pickets so they rot faster and I can justify buying new tools.
