Finally got my rain barrel hooked to the gutter after 3 weekends of fighting with PVC
Back in April I bought a 55 gallon barrel off Facebook Marketplace for $25 and it sat behind my shed for 6 weeks while I avoided the plumbing part. Last Saturday I finally cut the downspout and ran a diverter into the top, and when the storm hit Sunday night it filled up to the overflow in about 20 minutes flat. Anyone else running a rain barrel setup, and do you bother with a first flush diverter or just let the roof gunk settle to the bottom?
How much rain did you get that night? 20 minutes to fill 55 gallons means it was really coming down. I've had mine running for 3 years now and I skip the first flush diverter, just let it settle and pull from a spigot a few inches off the bottom so the gunk stays down there. One thing nobody told me at first, make sure that overflow actually dumps somewhere away from your foundation or you'll trade one problem for another. Also check the screen on your diverter after the first few big storms, leaves pile up fast and then the water just sheets right past the barrel lol.
