Found out my raised garden bed soil was basically dead

I was digging in my raised bed last weekend prepping for tomatoes and noticed the soil looked kinda dusty. Did a quick earthworm count from a video I found - zero worms in a whole shovel full. Turns out I haven't added any compost or mulch in over 2 years and the soil microbes probably starved. Got a cheap soil test kit from Ace Hardware and the organic matter was at like 1%. Anyone else accidentally killed their soil by ignoring it?

My raised bed soil last year had less organic matter than a parking lot, turns out "set it and forget it" doesn't work for dirt. I was thrilled to find one fat grub living in there, which I'm pretty sure was just there to mock my failed gardening efforts. We can start a club for people who slowly starved their soil to death over two years.

Did anybody else not realize that "feeding your soil" means physically adding new organic stuff every season, not just watering it? I killed two beds before someone told me compost isn't optional.
