My $5 trowel hack for leveling paver sand actually worked

I was getting so frustrated trying to get a smooth base for my 8x10 patio stones. The sand kept lumping up and I'd spend 20 minutes raking it flat every time. Then I grabbed a 2-foot piece of scrap 2x4 and screwed my trowel handle to the end of it like a long squeegee. Pulling that across leveled out the sand in one pass, no more kneeling or guesswork. Has anyone else rigged up a tool like this for their projects?

Pulling that across leveled out the sand in one pass" - I did pretty much the same thing with a old gardening hoe and a piece of plywood, worked like a charm.

Haha, that's awesome! A buddy of mine tried the same thing with a scrap piece of 2x4 and a rope, ended up dragging it across his whole backyard after a storm. Looked totally flat until the dog ran through it and messed it all up again.
