My neighbor laughed at my raised beds until she saw my soil test results
She told me I was wasting money on bagged soil when the native clay was fine, but after 3 failed tomato seasons I finally tested it and the pH was 7.8 with zero organic matter, so now I dump $40 worth of compost and peat moss into every bed and my cucumbers actually grew this year. Has anyone else had to completely ignore the old school advice in their neighborhood?

Did they actually test their own soil or just assume clay is always good?

Read somewhere that clay can actually suffocate roots if it's too compacted.
