My neighbor saw my rain barrel setup and asked if I was trying to breed mosquitoes
I had two open-top barrels sitting under my downspouts for about 6 weeks, and my neighbor Dave walked over, pointed at the water and asked if I was raising mosquitoes on purpose. I put window screen over both tops the next weekend and tossed in a couple of those mosquito dunk rings, and the water has stayed clear since. Has anyone else dealt with this, and do you screen the top or just drop dunks and hope for the best?
Good call on the window screen, that's the part people skip. Dunks alone work but the screen keeps leaves and junk out too so the water stays clearer longer. Six weeks with open tops is plenty of time for eggs to hatch, so Dave wasn't wrong to say something.
