Neighbor showed me a trick for keeping fence posts level on a slope

I was out in my backyard last weekend trying to dig post holes for a new section of fence on a hill. My neighbor Bob walked over and saw me struggling with a bubble level that kept going crazy. He told me to use a string line tied to stakes at both ends instead of relying on the level alone. We set it up in about 10 minutes and it made the whole thing dead simple. The posts came out even across a 40 foot run with a 2 foot drop. Has anyone else tried this method for uneven ground?

My buddy tried the same thing on his shed foundation and it saved him so much headache.
