Unpopular opinion: my 4 hour fence post job turned into 11 hours because of one rock
So last Saturday I finally decided to set the posts for a new fence along my back property line. I had it all planned out, 8 posts, renting an auger, figured 4 hours tops with a lunch break. First hole went fine, and then I hit this huge chunk of limestone about 14 inches down that the auger just bounced off. I ended up spending almost 3 hours with a digging bar and a sledge trying to get it out, and truth be told I broke a bar doing it. The other 7 holes went in easy after that, but by then the sun was already going down. I keep thinking about how a quick soil check with a probe before renting anything could have saved me almost a whole day. Has anyone found a cheap way to check what is under the grass before you start digging?
