My sourdough starter exploded out of the jar at 2am, here's what I did about it

Woke up to a mess in my kitchen in Denver last Tuesday. The lid on my 1 liter mason jar was blown clean off and there was sticky doughy goo all over the counter and part of the wall. I feed it before bed and forgot to leave the lid loose. It was like a science experiment gone wrong. Instead of tossing it, I scraped what I could into a bowl, added some flour and water to get the hydration right, and let it sit out for a few hours. It recovered fine, baked a decent loaf the next day. Lesson learned, I now keep it in a bigger container with a cloth cover and rubber band. Has anyone else had a starter go nuclear on them? How do you keep it from happening again?
