PSA: My sister-in-law from Tampa said my sourdough starter was 'just a pet you have to feed'

She's not a baker, and she said it as a joke, but it made me realize I treat my starter, 'Bubbles', with more care than some actual pets. I've been keeping it alive for 3 years, feeding it twice a day, and stressing over its temperature. Now I'm wondering if I'm overcomplicating a simple thing. Does anyone else feel like their starter is a high-maintenance roommate?

Got to disagree with your sister-in-law a little. A pet you have to feed is still a pet, right? So maybe Bubbles is just a very quiet, very flat pet.

Honestly, feeding it is one thing but a pet should at least move around or make a sound. Bubbles sounds more like a houseplant with extra steps.
