Why does nobody talk about proofing baskets going moldy?

I used to just toss my proofing banneton in the cabinet after a bake. Then last month I pulled it out and it was covered in green mold. Now I brush all the flour out and let it sit in the sun for a few hours. Anyone else had this happen or am I just unlucky?

Sun drying is the way to go for sure, but you really gotta shake out every last bit of flour first. That damp flour trapped in the crevices is what grows the mold. Question though - do you ever rinse yours with water or just dry brush it? Ive heard some people say a quick rinse and dry is fine but mine got funky after I tried that once.

Just brush all the flour out and let it sit in the sun" is exactly what I do too actually. I think people overthink this whole mold thing, proofing baskets need airflow more than anything else. Leave it out on the counter for a day after baking and you will never see green again.
